Military organisations and elite sport environments use this pattern specifically for this reason: it promotes composure without reducing alertness.

3. Physiological Sigh

What it is: A double inhale through the nose (a short inhale followed immediately by a second, fuller inhale before exhaling), then a long, slow exhale through the mouth.

What it does: The double inhale opens alveoli in the lungs that have partially collapsed during normal breathing, maximising gas exchange in one breath. The long exhale then offloads carbon dioxide rapidly, creating a faster drop in arousal than a standard extended exhale.
